In my chemistry class we have to do a project where we are asked to imagine that we are living in the year 2033 and describe a recent breakthrough or innovation in chemistry that has improved people’s lives. The categories are alternative energy sources, medicine/health, environment, and new materials. This is a senior AP class so ideas can be fairly advanced. An idea I had was using atmospheric electricity in the thermosphere to convert oxygen into ozone. This might be too simple though. Another idea was to design a new material to land on the surface of Venus, but I am not familiar with how materials absorb and displace heat…Any help at all would be great, thanks.

25 years in the future – that’s tough. I would think about something that people are going to absolutely need. People are talking about a shortness of oil these days, so the need for alternative energy is huge. But I believe in 25 years, we should have something that is sustainable in terms of an energy supply based on the amount of funding and reasearch going into this field and the diversity of that research (fuel cells, batteries, PV (solar), wind, hydrogen storage, etc.).

You are starting to hear more and more about potable water. In the US today, they are discussing the movement of water from north Texas to the south via pipeline sometime in the next 5 years. China and India will have a huge need for water as they continue to develop and have to support a large, growing population.

Obviously there is water everywhere on earth, but very little of it is potable as is (<1%). Desalination of ocean water has been investigated and recycling is also in progress. I would do some research - this is going to be a major problem in the years to come and would apply to many areas you mention including health, environment, and new materials (environmentally friendly oxidizing agents, filtration media, etc.)

Trust your own ideas, though. Some concepts may seem simple (water and ozone are both very simple molecules), but the effects and requirements for human life are enormous and extremely complex.
